Our Story

It all started when our company founder, Hung Tran, was tutoring undergraduate students while working on his PhD from the University of Iowa. He was taking on as many students as possible, hit a capacity limit given the work required for his degree as well.

The demand for tutors was high so he built a network that connected undergraduate students at his university to his friends that were studying elsewhere. This marked a shift in the way we understood tutoring - virtual sessions were not only as effective (if not more) than the traditional, in-person sessions, but were also much more convenient for students and tutors.

And so, we started with the mission of enabling human-human text chat conversations through an on-demand micro-tutoring service in education and in the workplace. As we scaled these chat-enabled services to millions of sessions, we developed a global workforce of over 10,000 subject-matter, tutoring Experts who joined the Got It Platform. We developed the screening and training processes and built robust manual and automated auditing processes for session quality. We built additional automation into our Platform which propelled our PhotoStudy & ExcelChat services, having supported over 1 million learners to date.

The Got It journey started almost 10 years ago and students still need help outside of the classroom. While the challenges remain, the technology is better. The complete Got It Education toolkit now fully supports students during the micro-tutoring sessions we started with through PhotoStudy, gives the extra advantage with open-ended sessions through StudyBoost, brings their math textbook to life through MathGPT, and supports social studying through our Discord Bot. While our platform, products and services have evolved, we remain committed to our mission of impacting educational opportunity by transforming academic support outside of the classroom.

Hung founded Got It when he was in grad school and is now serving as the President. Prior to Got It, he worked as a software engineer and led the international effort with MIT OpenCourseWare and RICE OpenStax to develop a national scale EdTech program to serve millions of students in Vietnam. Hung holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from The University of Iowa, as well as a Bachelor of Engineering from Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Matt served as the VP of Operations for Got It from 2015 to 2022. Now in an advisory leadership role, Matt helps lead business development and partnerships for Got It's growing portfolio of products. Prior to Got It Matt held a variety of senior technology operations roles at Lyft and Google. Matt holds a BS in Genetics from the University of Rochester and an MBA degree from Duke University.

Edsel joined the Got It team in December of 2017. As the Head of Expert Development and Quality, he leads our Expert Tutor community and ensures our tutoring sessions meet the learning needs of students. Having spent 15 years in public education, he has a passion for students and a deep background in pedagogy. Edsel is a graduate of the University of Illinois (B.S. Math Education) and holds graduate degrees (MaEd. & Ed.D.) in Administration and Leadership.

Arianna joined the Got It team in June of 2022 as the head of the B2B Business managing the team, revenue, and overall marketing strategy. Prior to coming on board, Arianna spent almost 8 years at Signal Vine (acquired by Modern Campus), a student communication tool, where she built the team, managed the customer strategy/revenue, and led the internal & external education efforts. Arianna is a graduate of James Madison University where she studied History & Italian.

Tanuj joined Got It in November 2019 and currently serves as the Product Lead. He has overseen the development and implementation of several projects that have improved product quality and user experience. Prior to Got It, Tanuj spent 8 years working in Fintech, Finance and the Ed-Tech space, across cities like Hong Kong and San Francisco managing global teams. He has an MBA from HKU and a Bachelors in Economics.
